2024 Firefighter of the Year

Frederick Walton - 3/8/2024

By Frederick Walton

Robert J. Fuller, a firefighter with the Shallotte Fire Department, has been named Firefighter of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Calabash Post 7288. Each year the Department of North Carolina Veterans of Foreign Wars selects emergency medical technicians, law enforcement and firefighter personnel to receive VFW Public Servant Awards.  Candidates must have received recognition by their colleagues or those they serve, demonstrated consistent excellence in the performance of their duties, demonstrated consistent dedication to their official responsibilities over a period of years and shown continuous growth in responsibilities and skills within their profession.

Robert is a professional firefighter who served many years in Prince George County, Maryland before taking early retirement to relocate to this area about 20 years ago. Since arriving, he has served with distinction at the Calabash, Ocean Isle Beach and, currently, the Shallotte Fire Department.

Surrounded by colleagues of the Shallotte Fire Department, family members and members of the VFW Calabash Post 7288, Robert received the award at the Shallotte Firehouse on Monday, February 26, 2024. His application was also chosen from among 8 other local VFW Posts to win recognition at the district level, as well as being named the top firefighter out of all 17 North Carolina districts to claim the highest spot in the state.

Shallotte Fire chief Paul F. Dunwell, IV congratulated Robert with a handshake and a smile, quipping he is not allowed to retire anytime soon. Dunwell’s glowing letter of recommendation was beneficial in helping Roberts name and service rise to the top of the nominees.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars appreciates the sacrifices made by the first responders serving our local community. Their dedication to keeping us safe and secure is often unseen and under appreciated. Congratulations to Robert and thank you for your service.
