2018 VFW District 5 Patriot Pen Winner Awarded Check

Dan Kossler - 3/11/2018

The first place winner of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Auxiliary Post #7288 Patriot Pen competition also won at the District level.

The winner, Grace Yardo, is an 8th Grade student at Shallotte Middle School. Bill Hertline, VFW District 5 Commander, presented Grace with the check along with Fran Redfield, VFW Auxiliary District 5 President, and Marie Laboy, Shallotte Middle School Principal.

Each year, VFW Posts and their auxiliaries sponsor the competition and judge the essays based upon the knowledge of the theme, did the student answer all the relevant facts of the theme (such as who, what, where, when and why) and the clarity of the writing.  Post winners advance to VFW district (regional) competition. The district’s first place winner then advances to the VFW Department (state) level.  That first place winner then competes on the national level with the national winner receiving a $5,000 savings bond.
