Teacher of the Year

Frederick Walton - 2/27/2024

The VFW Calabash Post 7288 presented the teacher of the year award to Ms. Jennifer Cheers at Shallotte Middle School. Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects elementary, middle, and high school teachers to participate in the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher program.

Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism are prime candidates for this award. Without our nation’s veterans, America wouldn't be the great nation it is today. Our youth deserve to learn about our rich history, traditions and the role of our veterans in creating and shaping America. Ms. Cheers demonstrates that commitment by encouraging her students to write essays and enter the annual VFW Patriot Pen competition. This competition gives young people a chance to explore patriotism and let their voice be heard through thoughtful essays.

In addition to being named the Teacher of the year locally, Ms. Cheers placed second on the District level. Congratulations!
